19 September 2005.
Well, once again, just
when we think we know what's going on, the birds change their minds. Homer
may have been on a go-south mission as suggested in the last map, but it
was a mission that didn't last long.
After the somewhat strange movement almost due
west from the head of the Chesapeake, he settled down on the upper reaches
of the Potomac River for almost two weeks. On the Sept. 6th he moved a bit
(about 25 miles) upriver and then on the 9th moved, once again about 25
miles. Ten days later, sometime on the
18th, he moved south. Seems like he's back on the migration bandwagon and
is not going to do the mountain ridge route. He
does seem to like his rivers. This time he's on the James River, which
empties into the Chesapeake by Newport News.
His less than straight-line travel has taken him
614 mi. (987 km) so far. Had he made this flight "as the crow
flies," it would have been only 464 mi. (746 km).
