27 Sept: Bluebeard has
FINALLY left the Island. Until only a few days before, he was still
feeding this year's young. Whether that young left on its own or perished
(it was either very lazy of not very good at fishing), we'll never know;
the young was not tagged or banded.
We do know that Bluebeard left the Vineyard
sometime on the 26th and made it to just a bit east of New Haven (a
popular spot for our birds this year) around 5PM.
Our next location for him is late on the 27th
(don't believe the 09/28 on the map--that's Greenwich Mean Time) 134 miles
(216 km) west. He spent the night just east of Allentown, PA.
It looks like we might have our first
tagged Vineyard Osprey to join the thousands and thousands of other
raptors that use the updrafts along the Kittatiny Ridge as a south-bound,
down escalator to points south. The world famous Hawk Mountain is on this
ridge and is probably on Bluebeard's itinerary.
We'll keep track of Bluebeard's distance
traveled. Distance: 229 mi (369km) in 2 days.
