2006 was a much better year for our Barred Owls than was 2005. We knew of 47 active pairs. Of these, 41 were suburban, 6 rural. We found all but 15 of the nests. Of the 47 pairs, 27 were in trees, 11 in boxes, one in a chimney, and 8 were unknown (we were confident that the other 7 undiscovered nests were in trees).
     Of our 47 nests, we knew the outcome of 25. Of these, only 5 failed for a success rate of 80%. We banded 15 of the roughly 30 young that were fledged by the 20 successful breeding pairs. [These numbers need checking and are not to be cited.]

News of our known pairs:

The female, "Big Momma",  at the Ardsley/Edgehill Park pair died in '05 and was replaced by "Little Momma", a young tagged at the neighboring Bromley nest in '04. This nest had eggs, but no young.

Near Central and Eastway, Aristotle was back in her nest box and fledged 2 young.

The Bay St. pair fledged two young from their regular nest.

The Berkeley pair fledged two young from their sycamore in the middle of Latta Park.

Out in the southern hinterlands, a pair returned to a tiny nest cavity in a relatively new development. They had 2 young--1 was rescued after falling from the too-small nest. The other young fledged.

Across East Blvd, The "Dilworth East meets Dilworth West" pair was not located. They were probably in the area, but we didn't find a nest.

The Bromley pair moved over to the Henley Rd. area, where the young from '04 grew up, and nested somewhere in the area. We never found the nest, but the male showed up with 2 youngsters. We put a box up in the hopes of luring them into a known site.

The Colville birds may now be nesting on Eastover Rd. An egg was discovered when a tree crew went up in a big Sycamore that had to come down. The tree was left standing while the young was raised.

The Colony Rd/Rockbrook female (tagged as a fledgling in the 2002 season on Princeton near Freedom Park) failed again.

The Commonwealth pair moved down the road a bit and hatched some eggs. We don't know what the outcome here was..

The Commonwealth south (Commonwealth and Monroe) pair was back in their first nest. They had 1 young, but we don't know if it fledged.

The Country Lane pair fledged 2 young out of their box.

The Cumberland Rd. (alongside Freedom Park) pair nested with unknown outcome

The Evergreen nest box was used and 1 young raised.

The Plaza/Kensington nest failed.

The Nature Museum pair was in their same nest as last year and fledged two young, both of which eluded all our many attempts at trapping them.

A new pair was discovered near the intersection of Chilton and Sharon Rds when a young was found on the ground. The young was banded and put back up in a special box built for the occasion but disappeared after a week or so.

King George and Wilhamena, formerly of Queens Rd East, are nesting near the intersection of Malvern and Sharon, just up the hill from the Chilton/Sharon pair. These guys raised two young, one of which we ALMOST caught over on Sherwood.

The Llewellyn pair (Percy & the Mrs.) tried nesting in their chimney again, and failed again.

Near Providence and Wendover, Laverne, bereaved widow of Vernon, who died crossing Providence the previous year, did not breed.
